How to Teach Your Kids About the Holy Spirit

Bible App for Kids

“If imperfect parents know how to lovingly take care of their children and give them what they need, how much more will the perfect heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit’s fullness when his children ask him.”

LUKE 11:13

The constant pressure of being an example to the kids in your life can be tough. None of us are perfect: we snap at our kids, get irritated when they don’t listen, and feel guilty when we give them an extra hour of screen time. We’re human. So, how can we possibly be expected to set an example of perfection when it comes to our little ones? That’s where the Holy Spirit comes in.

God’s Holy Spirit lives inside everyone who follows Jesus, giving us the ability to embody godly attributes (kindness, gentleness, and self-control, to name a few).

The children in our lives need those things just as much as we do. They get frightened, impatient, and frustrated, too.

The concept of teaching children about the Holy Spirit can be overwhelming. But, it’s important that they understand that God loves them so much that He sent His Spirit to be with them forever.

Not sure where to start? Check out Into the Clouds and God’s Wonderful Gift with your kids, and help them learn about the Holy Spirit in ways they can easily understand. Find these story icons in the app to get started:

Resources for Your Older Kids

Mother and daughter

Think of the older kids in your life. They’ve been using Bible App for Kids, but you may be noticing that they’re ready for more mature Bible-based tools. This puts them—and you—in a unique transition period. As they start to ask harder questions and figure out how to seek God in a way that’s uniquely their own, here are 3 ways you can come alongside them and continue to help them grow spiritually:

  1. Read Bible App for Kids Plans together

  2. Help your kids transition to engaging with Scripture in the Bible App by reading Bible App for Kids Plans together. Each Plan teaches life lessons based on a Bible App for Kids story, and they’re a great way to help older kids explore the YouVersion Bible App.

Simply open your YouVersion App and search for Bible App for Kids Plans.

  3. Watch Kids Bible Experience

  4. Much like Verse of the Day Stories, Kids Bible Experience offers a daily video teaching and reflection questions that help preteens connect with God in a way that’s uniquely theirs.

Consider going through the experience with your kids and use the reflection questions as a launching point for deeper discussions.

  5. Complete Plans as a family

  6. If your kids are starting to age out of Bible App for Kids, there is plenty of other content within YouVersion made with them in mind. Here are some of them:

At your next family time, consider going through one of these steps together, and talk about the biblical themes that stand out to you.

And no matter what next steps you take, we’re here to partner with you. You play an important role in how your children seek God and respond to Scripture, and we’re grateful that you choose to intentionally lead your children spiritually.

Teach your kids to pray like Jesus.

Bible App for Kids

It can be intimidating trying to teach your kids how to pray—especially if no one ever taught you. But prayer is simply an ongoing conversation between us and God.

Explore prayer together, at a level that’s appropriate for their age, and practice—together. How will you know if you’re doing it right?

You’ll all enjoy praying together so much that you look forward to it.

Your children learn best in fun, meaningful activities that you do together. Take advantage of natural opportunities throughout the day to pray for the different areas Jesus outlined in the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:1-4):

Early in the day. Thank God for today, and ask Him to help you be who He wants you to be.

Mealtimes. Thank God for your food, and ask Him to continue providing for your family.

When we’re upset. Ask God to help you feel better, apologize, forgive—and love each other better.

Bedtime. Here’s a simple prayer modeled after Jesus’ prayer in Luke 11:1-4. Tap below to save it to your Bible App:

Our Family’s Bedtime Prayer: God, we love you. Thank You for today. We’re excited for tomorrow. Please wrap Your angels around us and keep us safe. Help us have a good sleep tonight, with only good dreams. Amen
