4 Tips for Using the Bible App with iOS 7

Today, Apple released the newest version of their mobile operating system, iOS 7. To help you fully leverage the latest technology as you engage with God’s Word, here are four tips for using the Bible App with iOS 7:

  • Full support for the iPhone 5 and the new Videos feature are here!Make Space…and Keep the Bible App. If you haven’t upgraded to iOS 7 yet, you may temporarily need to make room for the update on your device by deleting photos, music, or apps. If you need additional space, you can simply remove a few offline Bible versions, and then re-download those versions again later when you have more space available.

  • A Fresh Start. For some people, updating to the newest operating system is a chance to get a fresh start. If you’ve fallen behind on your Bible Plan, or simply haven’t used the Bible App in a while, this can be a great chance for you to start fresh, sign up for a new Plan, and get back on track.

  • Let the Bible App Do the Talking. Many users tell us how much they love using audio Bibles. During your commute, in the kitchen, or even when you’re exercising, audio Bibles take advantage of being able to engage with Scripture in a hands-free way, and in places we may not otherwise be able to.

  • New Languages. In iOS 7, Apple introduced two new default language options: Mexican Spanish and Australian English. If you happen to switch your device to either of those languages, it’s possible you may not be able to launch the Bible App. We’ve submitted a fix to Apple for this bug. In the meantime, you can switch your phone back to English or Spanish and continue using the app until the new update is available.

As always, YouVersion will continue to take advantage of new technology and new ideas, with the goal of seeing this generation become the most Bible-engaged generation in history.

Easy Ways to Help the Bible App Reach 100 Million

If you’ve been keeping up with the Bible App lately, then you probably already know that the worldwide YouVersion community is approaching an extraordinary milestone:

100 million installs!

While we’d love to get there by YouVersion’s 5th birthday on July 10, 2013, we need your help to make it happen. Here are 3 easy things you can do right now to let people know about the Bible App:

  1. Share from the Bible App. If you have the most current version of the Bible App for your Android or iOS device, open the main menu and select Share. Then just tap the button and follow the simple instructions. (But even if you can’t get to your Bible App right now, you can still visit our special page, bible.com/100million, where we make it easy to share.)

  2. Show your support. Change your profile picture and cover photos to let your friends and followers know you love the Bible App. Just visit us on Twitter and Facebook, save one of our images, and make it your profile or cover photo. It’s fast and easy!

  3. Watch for opportunities. Wherever you are—hanging out with friends, in line at the grocery story, even at church—keep your eyes open for anyone using a smartphone. Ask them if they like their phone, then ask them if they know about the Bible App. Show them how to find it at bible.com/app or in their app store or, even better, install it for them (with permission, of course).

100 million may sound like a lot, but there are more than 7 billion people on the earth today. We’ve seen God do amazing things in the last 5 years, more than we could have ever asked or imagined. So we believe this is really just the very beginning. We believe that this could be the most Bible-engaged generation in history. And you can help!

Share and Win

Once a week, every Wednesday between now and July 10, we’ll be giving away prizes like iPads, iPad minis, T-shirts, and gift cards* to people who have shared the Bible App. All you need to do be entered in a prize drawing is share from inside the Bible App. Check in with us right here on our blog, and on Twitter and Facebook, for details and winners!

*Certain restrictions apply. Not all prizes are available to be shipped to all countries and all territories.

Latest iOS Bible App Update Adds New Features

You can get version 4.3 of the Bible App™ for iOS (iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) in the iTunes App Store, available now*. While you’ll find improvements in responsiveness and other adjustments, we’ve also managed to squeeze several new features into this release:

  • Full iPhone 5 support. One of the most common requests we’ve been hearing from YouVersion’s iOS community is support for the iPhone 5’s larger display. It’s here!
  • All-New “Videos” feature. On the Bible App’s main menu—right alongside Reading Plans, Bookmarks, and Notes—you’ll find the brand-new “Videos” option. You’ve already let us know you enjoy watching video with Reading Plans. Now you can experience even more of God’s Word in this new way! Watch and share video content based directly on Scripture, like clips from History channel miniseries The Bible, Big Book Media and Toy Gun Productions’ The Lumo Project, and Jesus Film Media’s JESUS movie.
  • New “Getting Started” experience. When you first install the Bible App on your device, this handy tutorial walks you through everything you need to know, from setting up your free  ouVersion account to signing up for your first Reading Plan. Even if you’re already a long-time Bible App user, you might want to check out this great tool to see if you’ve been missing anything. Inside the Bible App, simply tap Help, Getting Started.
  • Show/Hide cross references and footnotes. Some Bible versions include additional supporting material that expands on the Bible text you’re currently reading. Now you can see these cross references and footnotes directly inline with your text. When you’re in the Bible Reader, just tap the Settings icon (the gear) and check the features you want to see. Hiding them is just as easy — simply uncheck.
  • Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements. We never stop working to improve your experience with the Bible App for iOS and YouVersion. Each new update allows us to pass several of these adjustments on to you, whether they came from issues you reported through our Support website or our own in-house testing and development.

Please tell your friends on Facebook and Twitter about this latest release, and let us know what you think. Your feedback plays a critical role in helping us determine what features we should be focusing our resources on.

UPDATE:

*We are aware of an issue affecting some users – if your app will not open or move past the YouVersion opening screen after you update, deleting and reinstalling the app will resolve this issue. Don’t worry about losing your info—your plans, notes, bookmarks, etc. will still be there for you when you sign in again. Our apologies for any inconvenience. Still need help? Head over to our Help Website and contact our team. Or find us on Twitter – @YouVersionHelp

Bible App for iOS Adds More Offline Features, Thai Language Support

The new version of the Bible App™ for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch — version 4.2 — is available now in the iTunes App Store. Since many of you use the Bible App during times when you don’t have a mobile signal or Internet connection, one of the most frequent requests from the YouVersion community has been to make more of our features available offline. We think you’ll find a lot to love in this latest update:

Enhanced Offline Experience. We’ve added offline capabilities to most of your favorite features, like Reading Plans, Notes, and even your customized Today view! We’ve also improved the display of your list of downloaded Bible Versions when you’re offline. Now the Bible App for iOS stores information for all of these things locally on your device, only syncing with your online account in the background once you’re connected again. Add new Notes and keep up on your Reading Plans, anytime, anywhere — even when you can’t get a signal!

Better Bookmarking. Bookmarks still work the way you’re used to. Just tap a verse or passage you want to share, memorize, or study to Bookmark it. But we’ve added the ability to edit your Bookmarks, so you can keep them organized just how you like.

In-App Password Change. You’ve always been able to sign in and out from inside the Bible App, but if you wanted to update your password, you had to visit YouVersion.com. Not anymore! Now, for the first time ever, you can change your password directly from the Bible App on your device.

Thai Language Support. You probably know that YouVersion offers Bible versions in more than 200 languages. But did you know that, thanks to an awesome worldwide community of YouVersion translation volunteers, you can also set the Bible App’s interface on your Apple device—menus, buttons, and controls—to display in any of 31 languages? Simply go to Settings, General, and pick your favorite, or change the default language for your device. Thai is a brand new addition to YouVersion’s interface language offerings, available first on iOS in this release (and coming soon to more platforms)!

Bug Fixes and Performance Enhancements. As always, for each new release of the Bible App for iOS, we take the opportunity to make several improvements and adjustments. While our community lets us know about issues through our Support website, our own testing and development often reveal things we can do to make your overall YouVersion experience better.

Be sure to let your friends know about this latest update to the Bible App for iOS, especially if they speak Thai! And come see us on Facebook and Twitter. We love hearing from you!

The Bible App Named in Apple’s Best of 2012

For the third year in a row, the Bible App™ has been ranked in the top 100 Free apps for iPhone on Apple’s “Best of” list. The Bible App was in the top 100 for iPad too — which means that it has appeared in the top 100 iPad apps every year since the iPad was introduced!

Of course, the real story behind the Bible App’s success and recognition is you, the global YouVersion community.

It’s because you download the Bible App onto your devices and help your friends download it onto theirs. It’s because so many of you use the Bible App every day to engage with God’s Word. It’s because you never stop sharing how the Bible is shaping your life on Facebook, on Twitter, and face to face. And it’s because so many of you generously donate your gifts and talents as volunteers to help YouVersion constantly improve.

YOU are the “Best of 2012.” Thank you. And congratulations!

Why Isn’t the Bible App Optimized for iPhone 5?

We hope you’ve already downloaded the latest update of the Bible App™ for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), available now in the iTunes App Store. With each release, we try to bring you with the best experience possible on the device of your choice.

If you have an iPhone 5, while the newest release of the Bible App will work just fine on your device, you’ll probably notice that it doesn’t fill your new, larger screen. But all of the features you know and love in the Bible App are still there, along with a few improvements.

Unfortunately, if we update the Bible App to add support for the iPhone 5’s taller screen, Apple requires us to drop support for many iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches with older operating systems. That would mean that the 700–900 people who are installing the Bible App on these older devices every day wouldn’t be able to get it at all. It also means that many thousands of others wouldn’t be able to upgrade the Bible App they already have installed.

More than 69 million people have installed the Bible App so far. While that number includes Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and many other types of devices, almost 30 million people are using the Bible App on Apple devices. We simply can’t justify compromising simple, free access to God’s Word for so many people just because they have older devices.

Now, we’re constantly reviewing downloads, how often and how long people interact with the Bible App, and what devices they’re using to connect. We take very seriously our responsibility to position our development resources where they’ll have the greatest impact. And our simple mission remains the same: To help as many people as possible engage with the Bible, no matter where they live or what language they prefer—or even which Apple device they happen to have.

Video Devotionals Launch in the Bible App

You may know that YouVersion already offers hundreds of versions you can read in many languages, along with audio Bibles you can listen to as you’re doing other things. Now we’re also adding video devotionals you can watch on your mobile device and at YouVersion.com!

for KING & COUNTRY - Named one of Billboard Magazine’s “Artists to Watch” in 2012, for KING & COUNTRY put together a devotional that breaks down seven songs from their debut album Crave, including “Proof of Your Love.” 7 days

And whether you’re watching a video devotional, listening to an audio Bible, or checking out one of our Featured Plans, we hope all of these Plans help you continue engaging with the Bible!
