We’ve been working hard to bring you a new Bible app for the Symbian platform and we’re excited to announce that it’s ready and available for download now in the Opera mobile store and on GetJar.com. Many Americans aren’t familiar with the Symbian mobile platform, so we’ll take a moment to explain why we believe this is a big deal.First, Symbian accounts for about 40% of smartphones in the world. There are hundreds of millions of people carrying a Symbian-powered device in hundreds of countries. Second, because Symbian is so ubiquitous outside the United States, we’re excited to see how God uses this step to reach the world with the Bible, helping millions more engage with Scripture.
Like the first version of our mobile Bible app on other new platforms, the Symbian app is currently a basic Bible reader that accomplishes our foundational purpose of increasing Bible engagement around the world. Future development will bring more features you’ve come to love on other mobile platforms, like Reading Plans, social sharing with Twitter and Facebook, YouVersion Live, and more.
Have fun with the new Symbian app and don’t forget to tell your friends to download the YouVersion Bible app on their phones. It’s the easiest way to give someone a free Bible!
A new version of the YouVersion Bible app for Palm Pre/Pixi was made available last week in the Palm App Catalog and brings lots of brand new features that I’m really excited to tell you about. Because of the speed of development for WebOS, Palm has turned into the proving grounds for great features for YouVersion. That means that our Palm app is likely to be a preview of what you’ll see very soon in all of our other apps.
The biggest new component in the Palm app is the section called “Profiles”. The Profiles component is a full experience where you can interact with all of your YouVersion friends, information (Contributions, Likes, Tags, etc.), and activity streams. The best explanation of Profiles is that it puts the entire YouVersion community in the palm of your hand.
It’s such a big update that all it would take too long to explain all of the capabilities of the Profiles component here. You’ll just have to download it and check it out for yourself to get a complete idea of how it works. If you don’t have a Palm Pre/Pixi, take a look at a few screenshots below to whet your appetite for this amazing new feature.
Also included in this release for Palm Pre/Pixi is the addition of YouVersion Live. Now you can interact with church services and other live events right on your Palm WebOS device. This addition means that YouVersion Live is now available on four major mobile platforms including iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.
We hope you enjoy this update to the Palm Pre/Pixi. If there’s something missing or if you think we could improve something, please let us know at http://youversion.com/support.

Comments Off on New for iPhone/iPad: Facebook Sharing & Universal App
The latest version of the YouVersion iPhone & iPad app is available now in the iTunes App Store. This update (2.3.1), along with the previous update (2.3), brings several niceties and one big feature update to Apple’s mobile platform. Here’s the breakdown by version.
With the 2.3 update, we joined our popular iPhone Bible app with our iPad app to create a single application that runs on both devices. This means you’ll only need to stay up-to-date with one app for your favorite Bible application on both iPhone and iPad. We also moved the “sign-in” to the Settings menu to prepare the way for the biggest update coming in 2.3.1.
We went one step further with 2.3.1 and completely changed how the app handles sharing to Twitter, plus we added the ability to share to Facebook. With the new sharing structure, you can share seamlessly to Twitter and Facebook at the same time through YouVersion Connections (which was also added recently to the YouVersion website, as well as the Palm Pre/Pixi and Blackberry apps). Once you’ve connected your YouVersion account, sharing the Bible with your friends on Twitter & Facebook will be easier than ever.
We have big plans for the iPhone & iPad (iOS) platform in the coming months, but we wanted to get these updates out to you as soon as possible. Let us know what you think by rating the app in the App Store and leaving a comment. Don’t forget that issues can be reported on our support site at http://youversion.com/support.

Comments Off on Announcing New Bible App for Palm/HP WebOS
The WebOS platform was recently acquired by HP, and we’ve been working on some plans for the mobile operating system ourselves. Today we’re releasing a new, fully native Bible app that will make YouVersion’s mobile Bible available to millions more people around the world. We also happen to think it’s the most enjoyable mobile Bible reading experience in the world! Let’s jump into the good stuff…
Improved Bible Reader
●Select and interact with multiple Bible verses at one time.
●Load chapters and navigate the Bible faster and with less load time.
●View text in 5 different size options.
●Read the Bible in portrait or landscape mode with the flick of your wrist.
●Search the Bible for keywords or Bible references more quickly than ever right inside the Bible reader.
●Share Bible verses with anyone via SMS (text message) and email to encourage someone privately.
●Bookmark multiple verses at one time.
●Create a new tag for your selected verses to group verses by shared topics or ideas.
●Create a new contribution about your selected verses to share your thoughts with the broader YouVersion community.
●View contributions (your own or others’) for the selected verses to get new perspective on that passage or see if yours has changed from when you first posted it.
Automatic Sync With YouVersion.com
This new WebOS app will be the first of our mobile Bible apps to automatically sync your YouVersion activity and data between YouVersion.com and your mobile Bible app. Right now, bookmarks and reading plans are the only two pieces of data that are synced both ways (to YouVersion and back to the device), but more syncing is coming very, very soon.
Reading Plans are Different in this App
●Quickly and easily jump to missed days in the past or skip ahead to future reading selections with a mobile version of the Reading Plan Calendar we introduced on YouVersion.com recently. (Read more about the Reading Plan Calendar.)
●Use the main Bible reader to read your day’s selections so you have full interaction with Bible verses. (We added a simple navigation footer to the main reader when reading your day’s selections so you can quickly navigate within your reading plan selections.)
●Share your reading plan with your friends on Facebook and Twitter or through SMS (text message) or email.
There are plenty more “featurettes” like low-light mode for the whole app, 100% integration with YouVersion Connections, and many consolidated views for faster navigation, but you can encounter those fun little gems on your own.
And the best news of all is that it’s ready for you to download right now in the App Catalog!
We hope you enjoy the new WebOS Bible app. Don’t forget to share the app with your friends on Facebook and Twitter. And if you’re the social networking type, let us know what you think of the app on Twitter (@YouVersion) or Facebook (http://facebook.com/youversion).

Comments Off on YouVersion Bible App for iPhone & iPod Touch Update: Enhanced Bible Reading & Bug Fixes
The most recent update to the YouVersion iPhone app is now available in iTunes! We’re excited to tell you about what’s included with this release:
Enhanced Bible Reading Features (by popular demand!)
~ Landscape mode in main Bible reader: To read the Bible in landscape mode, tilt your iPhone or iPod Touch to the left 90’. You’ll be able to read the Bible in full, wide screen style while still having the ability to interact with Bible verses and move to the next or previous chapter.
~ Full Bible interaction in reading plan reader: Now you can interact with Bible verses from within the reading plan reader. While you’re completing your daily Bible reading, you’ll be able to share a verse with a friend through email or Twitter, view contributions from other YouVersion users, or bookmark a verse for later reference.
~ Losing offline data: Some users were experiencing a loss of offline Bible versions and/or bookmarks intermittently. This should no longer happen.
~ Poor handling of connection loss: In previous versions, losing your data connection would cause an infinite loading spinner or an app crash. Connection loss is handled more gracefully now.
~ Incomplete reading plan selections: After changing the start/end dates for a reading plan, some users reported not seeing that change fully take place within the YouVersion iPhone app. That bug is squashed and all changes made on www.youversion.com to a reading plan should be seen within the app.
~ iPod Touch problems: iPod Touch users were experiencing odd activity when outside the range of wifi including the inability to open the app or the loss of offline Bible versions. Those issues have been addressed.
~ Dock icons reset in “Airplane Mode”: Some users reported losing the custom order of icons in the dock within the YouVersion iPhone app when opening the app in “Airplane Mode”. We fixed this too.
The YouVersion app for iPhone and iPod touch has experienced amazing growth in the past 6-8 months. With more than 2 million YouVersion users on Apple’s mobile platform alone, the iPhone and iPod touch have become remarkable tools for people around the world to engage with God’s Word wherever they are.

Comments Off on NEW YouVersion Bible App for Palm’s WebOS!
The new YouVersion Bible app for Palm’s WebOS platform was approved and released in Palm’s App Catalog early last week. We’re excited for this release and have big plans for future development on the WebOS platform. You can download the app now from Palm’s website (http://goo.gl/hcbO) or search for “youversion” in the App Catalog on your Palm Pre or Pixi.
This release represents our first effort at providing a robust YouVersion Bible application for Palm’s budding platform and should be considered a “beta” release for two reasons.
Functionality is limited to what is possible on our mobile website. This beta release is a simple embedded browser that makes accessing our mobile website (http://m.youversion.com) quick and easy.
We have big plans for future iterations of this application to bring it from “beta” stage to a full-featured native YouVersion Bible app.
We love our Palm users…you’re some of the most vocal and passionate users we have and we’re aware of your deep desire to see YouVersion be amazing on WebOS phones. We share in that desire, and are excited to see the webOS platform grow and expand so we can expand our development efforts. Look for more webOS updates throughout the year.
Comments Off on YouVersion Bible App for Android Update: Sign-in, Reading Plans, Twitter, Better UX, Speed Enhancements
A new update to the YouVersion Bible app for Android is available in the Android Market. You can download it by going to http://youversion.com/download from your Android-powered device. This update includes some great new features, speed enhancements, and a more polished user experience (UX). Here are the details:
~ Now you can sign in with your YouVersion account. This is the first step toward full integration with all the power of YouVersion.com. The first feature-specific integration is reading plans, but many more syncing options are planned for future releases.
~ The reading plans feature-set is robust. It was the first of its kind when we released it for YouVersion.com, the mobile website, the iPhone app and the Blackberry app, and we’re excited to now offer the same functionality to YouVersion’s awesome Android users. You’ll be able to follow any of the 20+ YouVersion reading plans, track your reading progress, and share your readings with your friends through Twitter and email. (Facebook integration is on our roadmap.)
~ We’ve added the sharing capabilities of Android to scripture and reading plans, which means you can now share from the other apps you have installed on your phone like Email, SMS, Twitter or Evernote for example.
~ We spent some time on this release rethinking the UX and working to make your experience reading the Bible on your Android device as smooth and enjoyable as possible. We think you’ll like the subtle (and some not-so-subtle) improvements.
~ Android users are used to crisp experiences with Google’s native applications like the Browser, Gmail, Maps, etc. We want to make your experience with the YouVersion Bible app just as snappy and responsive, so we made it a point to speed up the app with this update. If you’re a long-time user of the YouVersion Android app, you’ll notice a significant improvement in response time for core actions like selecting a verse, changing versions, scrolling through text, moving to the next chapter in the Bible, etc.
This release has been highly anticipated within the YouVersion team and we’re confident that you’ll enjoy all the changes we’ve made. To download this release, and any future updates, go to http://youversion.com/download on your mobile phone. And, if you have feedback for us regarding this update, go to http://support.youversion.com and let us know about it.
Here are a few screen shots for your viewing pleasure!

Comments Off on NEW YouVersion Bible App for Java Phones!
We’re launching a new Bible application today that’s compatible with most Java-enabled phones and it’s available for download now. This app will give you access to the entire Bible (41 translations in 22 languages) on any phone that can run Java apps with a screen resolution of 240×320 or 320×240.
This release is significant for many reasons, but the most important reason is that the Java Bible app will be targeting hundreds of millions of people around the world that live in less developed countries and don’t have good mobile data connections or powerful smartphones. This includes India, China, Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. We’re most excited about the possibility of giving away millions of free Bibles in places where the Bible isn’t readily available.
Why is this app different?
Since most people associate mobile applications with smartphones like the iPhone, we thought it would help if we explained why this app is different.
Because of the basic nature of Java phones and the limited availability of mobile data connections, we’ve intentionally kept the Java Bible app simple. To accommodate as many phones as possible, we built two versions: (1) a “bundled” version that includes the ASV Bible and doesn’t need a data connection to read the Bible and (2) a “lite” version that necessitates a data connection to read the Bible.
Both the “bundled” and the “lite” versions can be downloaded directly to your computer and then transferred to your Java phone manually to allow people with zero mobile data connection the chance to have the Bible on their phone. But, of course, if you do have a data connection you will still be able to download the app from bible.com/app just like all of our other Bible apps.
What is a “Java-enabled phone”?
Java (J2ME or Java ME) is the most ubiquitous application platform for mobile devices. Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Sony, Nokia, and others offer handsets that run Java applications. For example, if you have a Motorola Razor or a Nokia E63 (two of the most popular phones in the world), you can run Java apps. Even Windows Mobile devices can use this app.
How to Download
The easiest way to download the YouVersion Bible app for Java is to visit bible.com/app from your Java-enabled mobile phone. From there you’ll be taken to the Java application store where you’ll be able to download the right version for your phone.

Comments Off on YouVersion iPhone Bible App 2.2
The YouVersion offices have been buzzing with anticipation for version 2.2 of the iPhone Bible app that has just been made available in the iTunes App Store. We’re excited to put this new version in your hands before the New Year because it includes some amazing new features! Let’s take a look.
When you open the new version, you’ll see a welcome screen that gives you the option to “Sign In to YouVersion.com” or “Create An Account.” If you choose not to sign in now, you will still be able to sign in later within the app.
Most of the new features in this version are related to the advanced Reading Plans options. The first time you open this section, you’ll see the option to “View All Plans” or “View Default Plan.” If you choose to stick with the default plan, you’ll still be able to go back and take advantage of the advanced features later.
Choosing “View All Plans” will take you to a list of all available reading plans from YouVersion.com. From here, you can sign in with your YouVersion.com account to see the plans you’ve started already or to start a new plan. Tapping a reading plan in the list will show you the details of that plan.
When viewing the details of a reading plan, you’ll have several options. You can view a sample of the plan (View Today’s Reading), start following the plan (requires sign-in), or stop following the plan (if you’re already following that plan). You can even read a description of the plan, see your start/end dates, percentage of completion, or get more information about the provider of that reading plan.
When you tap “View Today’s Reading,” you’ll see the list of reading selections for today which you can choose to read, along with the option to go to tomorrow’s reading assignment or share your plan on Twitter or via email. If you’re signed in and looking at a plan you’re following, you’ll also see check-boxes to mark off what you’ve read. (Your progress will be synced to your YouVersion.com account.)
Tapping a selection in the list takes you to a modified version of the main Bible reader. Notice the different dock at the bottom of the screen. That simple tool will allow you to jump between all the selections for that day. As you read, the app will track your progress for you. So, when you return to the list of today’s selections, you’ll notice that your plan is already checked off for you. If you didn’t actually read a particular selection, just uncheck it.
If you don’t have a YouVersion account yet, you’ll be able to sign up for a new account from anywhere within the Reading Plans section of the app or from the Settings page.
We hope the new Reading Plan features will help you meet your Bible reading goals for 2010. As always, to download this application or the YouVersion Bible app for Blackberry or Android, go to http://youversion.com/download from your mobile device.
