Bible App for Android: Use Less Data

low-bandwidth
We want to help you connect with God’s Word every day, even when you’re in places where network access is limited or where data is expensive. If you keep your Bible App up-to-date, then we hope you’ve already been enjoying the many new features we’ve introduced recently — along with our updates to existing ones — all designed to give you the best offline Bible App experience possible. Today we’re very excited to announce an all-new, super-practical feature we think you’re going to love:

Now you can control how much data the Bible App uses on your Android device.

Before the Bible App can show you images — in your Home feed, for example, or browsing through Bible Plans, or searching for Events — it has to download them first. When you have a strong Internet connection, that’s great. But if you have low signal on either Wi-Fi or cellular, those same images may not load quickly. This update helps you use less data by specifying which conditions the Bible App should consider before it loads images. When you want it to conserve data, the Bible App will display text instead, wrapping it in placeholders in attractive colors.

After you’ve run the update, look for “Downloading Images” in your Settings:

settings

Auto Detect Download images at the optimum resolution available, based on the current network signal strength.
Wi-Fi Only Only download images when your device is connected to a wireless network.
Always Always download the highest-resolution images available.
Never Never download images, regardless of network connection.

Bible App Update: Compare Versions, New Plan Discovery, More…

Our mission at YouVersion has always been to help you engage with the Bible. Last year, we completely redesigned the Bible App to make it even easier to get more of God’s Word into your daily life. Today, we’re thrilled to announce our most significant update since that launch. These brand-new features — along with exciting upgrades to some old favorites — now help you do more of the things you want, even faster, and more simply than ever before.

Compare Versions

android-compare-versions
Now, for the first time ever in the Bible App, you can quickly see how different Bible versions translate the same passage. Perhaps you’re having difficulty understanding the meaning of a passage, and you want to to see it phrased another way. Or maybe you come across a verse that feels like you’ve heard it before, but it’s just not quite the way you remember it. Tap on the verse, then tap Compare Versions, and see the same verse repeated in all of your recently used Bible translations. And as you’re comparing, you can easily add or remove which versions you’re seeing. You can even Compare Versions when you’re offline, showing your verse in any versions you’ve previously downloaded.

New Bible Plan Discovery

iphone-template-plans
We never stop exploring new ways that we can equip you with tools to bring biblical wisdom to every aspect of your everyday life. For this release, we created several new Plan categories, then expanded the ways we categorize Plans, then completely redesigned our Plan “Discover” page to be more visual and intuitive. Struggling with stress? Looking for wisdom for your relationships? Need a dose of hope of inspiration? Now, not only is it easier to find just the right Bible Plan(s) for the season of life you’re in — it’s fun!

New Verse Action Design

We also completely redesigned how Verse Actions work, with a handy new menu that makes it simple to Share, Bookmark, Highlight, create Verse Images, and more. When you feel inspired as you’re reading or listening, one tap slides your options into view at the bottom of the screen… without blocking your view of Scripture. One more tap starts any available action. Adding or removing a Highlight — or changing the color of an existing one — is now as easy as touching a dot on the all-new color bar. Slide the Verse Actions bar from left to right to see even more options, such as custom Highlight colors and our all-new Compare Versions feature.

airplane-mode

Connect with Scripture… even offline.

Great opportunities to engage daily with God’s Word often happen when you don’t have a reliable Internet connection: on trains, on airplanes, or when you’re enjoying the outdoors. That’s why many Bible App features now also work offline. Sometime when you do have a connection, take just a few minutes to download a few Bible versions and subscribe to a Bible Plan (or several), and you’ll have them whenever you need them, even offline.3 And when you’re able to reconnect again later, the Bible App will sync your offline activity to your YouVersion account, making it available on all your devices.

Updating is easy.

This new release also includes several other improvements: bottom navigation that conforms to Google’s Material design specification, more refined control over your language settings, and a smoother sign in / sign up experience. Even with all of these improvements, we still managed to reduce the app’s size! How can you take advantage of all these great new features?

Introducing Events, the Newest Feature in the Bible App

If you’ve ever used the “Live” tab in the Bible App, then you’ll love the all-new feature we’re introducing today that replaces it. It’s called Events. Here’s what Events will do for you:

Discover

Don’t miss a thing.

The Discover tab helps you find services happening at your church, as well as other special events taking place nearby.

Follow-Along

Keep up with the action.

As you attend an Event, you’ll be able to follow along with its main points, Bible references, and more… all from inside the Bible App!

Notes

Capture the moment.

When God’s Word begins speaking to you through a message, take notes in your own copy of that Event, saved and synced to your free YouVersion account.

Share

Get the Word out.

Share the what, where, and when about an Event to invite your friends to it. Share portions of an Event you’re attending—key points, Bible verses, artwork, and more—to your social networks. Even export the entire contents of an Event, with or without your notes, to apps like Evernote or to your email.

Saved-Events

Take church with you.

Save an Event to your YouVersion account (including your notes) so you can study it more deeply later and still have the context. Revisit all your favorite Events whenever you want on your Saved Events tab.

Plans

Get it all.

Discover Bible Reading Plans and Devotionals that can help you go further with the messages that resonate with you. Start a new Plan, or save it for later… all from inside an Event.

What if my church isn’t using Events?

YouVersion Events is an all-new service, so it’s likely that the leadership at your church hasn’t heard about it yet. Just as with YouVersion Live, Events is a completely free service that we’re happy to provide to churches. If you’d like your church to use Events, click below to let your church leadership know about it.

Events: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Events?

Events is a completely free feature inside the YouVersion Bible App that helps you easily connect with church events that you’re attending. Events can also help you discover other church and special events happening nearby. If your church isn’t using Events yet, you can direct your church leadership to bible.com/features/events, where they can sign up for a free YouVersion account to begin creating their own Events. Our free administrative tools for Events make it easy for your church to share key message points, Bible references, artwork, external links, important church news, and more.

I don’t see Events in my Bible App. Where is it?

iOS: Events is under the More view (…) on your toolbar, after Videos. Android: Events is in the main menu, under Videos (tap the menu icon at the top left corner). If you don’t see Events, but you see a “Live” tab, then you are running an older version of the Bible App. Please update your Bible App to the latest version by visiting http://bible.com/app.

Do I have to update my Bible App to get Events?

Yes. Because Events is an all-new feature, you must update the Bible App to get it. (We recommend that you configure your device to receive automatic updates.)

Do I have to have a YouVersion account to use Events?

You can search for and view Events without a YouVersion account. But, if you would like to take notes or save an Event, you must have a YouVersion account. Signing up is simple, and YouVersion accounts are completely free. A YouVersion account gives you access to all of the most powerful features of the Bible App — Bible Plans, Verse Images, Highlights, Notes, and more — synced across all your devices. Visit bible.com/sign-up to get your free account now.

Does it cost anything to use Events?

No. The Bible App has always been free, and it always will be. Although Events is an all-new service, it’s an integral part of the Bible App.

How can I find an Event?

The Bible App needs access to location services on your device to find Events near you. If you’re looking for a specific Event and you know what it’s called, you can search using part of its title.

Do I have to attend an Event to see it in the app?

No. If you know an Event’s title or its location, you can search for it that way. But, the purpose of our Events feature is to help you engage more with Events that you attend.

Can I see Events that have already ended?

Yes, if you have saved the Event, or if you have a direct link to it. However, once an event has ended, it will no longer appear in Events search.
