7 Tips to Leading Your Family Spiritually

The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
Psalm 37:23 (NLT)

You want to lead your kids in a growing relationship with Christ. But with your active family’s busy schedule, it can be hard to find the time. You may even feel unqualified to lead your children. If you’re like most parents, you’re still trying to figure out what faith looks like in your own life.

To help you get started, we’ve gathered some of our favorite tips from Focus on the Family. Don’t try to use all of these ideas at once. If you’ll be intentional to phase them in over time, they should gradually begin happening naturally:

1. Make it fun.

Engaging with God’s will through His Word isn’t school textbooks and quizzes; your family life is an adventure. Talk with your kids about things relevant to their lives, helping them apply biblical principles with age-appropriate language they can understand. Don’t try to “teach.” Encourage exploration, with gentle course corrections where they need it.

2. Keep it simple.

The average adult can listen for about 30 seconds before their mind wants to wander. Kids’ attention spans are even shorter. So instead of trying to “explain,” try asking leading questions. Feed your child’s natural curiosity. Your questions — and theirs — will fuel meaningful conversations.

3. Watch for opportunities.

Teachable moments happen everywhere in our everyday lives. When you see a squirrel burying an acorn, marvel together at how God provides for us. When you see trash in the park, say it makes you sad because God wants us to take good care of His earth. Make simple, connectable observations.

“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 (NIV)

4. Be an example.

Live out your faith. Allow God’s Spirit to speak into your life, constantly transforming you into the person He wants you to become. You can’t lead your children to places you haven’t been. And connecting with the Bible — every day — is one of the best ways we know to grow.

5. Schedule time together.

Schedule regular times to talk at home about faith and spiritual things. Then demonstrate how we put faith into action. Lead your family to be spiritual contributors, not spiritual consumers. Make it a family priority to attend church regularly — and to participate. Then stay consistent, both at home and in your community of faith.

6. Talk to God together.

Lead your kids in praying about the things they care about. And lead them to never stop taking those things to God. Model for them how they can listen for His still, small voice. Keep track of things you’re praying for together, and celebrate when God answers. Demonstrate for your children what a life of worship and gratitude looks like.

7. Make it fun.

No, that’s not a mistake — this one is so important, we put it on our list twice! When your kids enjoy exploring their faith with you, they’ll look forward to family time together. They’ll even initiate it! Even better, you’ll be giving them the most important part of their faith: they’ll own their own spiritual growth, continually drawing closer to God.

Children, do what your parents tell you.
This is only right. “Honor your father and mother”
is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it,
namely, “so you will live well and have a long life.”

Fathers, don’t exasperate your children by coming down hard on them.
Take them by the hand and lead them in the way of the Master.
Ephesians 6:1–4

How a single Bible verse can unite your family

What’s a great way to lead your family?

Start with a verse.

Many families enjoy choosing a “Family Bible Verse” that defines everything they value most. Never had a family verse before? A theme verse is like an anchor for your family: you can choose it together, memorize it together, lean on it together, and rally together around it.

Share your family verse with us, and your family could win a prize pack picnic basket. Just use the Bible App to make a Verse Image for your family verse (here’s how), then share it on Twitter, Instagram, or at, using #OurFamilyVerse.

Winners will be treated to everything you need for a family picnic: a custom YouVersion picnic blanket, tumblers, treats, and other snacking essentials!*

Here are just a few of our favorite verses to help you get started:

…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15, NKJV

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a
light for my path.
Psalm 119:105, NLT

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:11–13, NIV

*Prize packs will be selected at random from eligible entries. Announcing Family Bible Week

Change is in the air. For much of the world, this change in the seasons marks the start of family fun and celebration. Many families are planning activities to keep their school-aged children occupied during the summer season. Other families are planning the next season of their lives, as they celebrate their “kids” who are graduating. And this coming Sunday, families from many countries will celebrate their mothers, mothers-in-law, and grandmothers for Mother’s Day.

That’s why today we’re announcing Family Bible Week. Family Bible Week is our special summer kick-off event to help you draw your family together around God’s Word. Beginning this Sunday, May 10th, join us for a week of tips, ideas… and prizes!

Celebrate Mom. Share a Bible verse that honors your mother and expresses how much she means to you. (We’ll suggest a few of our favorites to help get you started.)

Pick a Family Bible Plan. Choose a Bible Plan that your whole family can read together. (We’ll share a list of Plans that we recommend.) And if you’ll let us know which Plan you’re doing by using the hashtag #FamilyBiblePlan, your family may even win a prize!

Share Your Story. How does your family let God’s Word speak into your lives? How do you keep your family centered around faith in Christ? We’d love to hear your story! This week, we’ll tell you the best ways you can share it with us.

Create a Family Verse Image. What’s your family’s “theme” Bible verse? Don’t have one? No worries! We’ll offer some tips for how your family can choose their favorite. And if you share your Family Verse as a Verse Image using the hashtag #OurFamilyVerse, we’ll be randomly selecting a few families to receive prizes!

Enjoy Family Story Time. The next all-new Bible App for Kids story arrives next Friday. We’ll tell you then what it is and how you can get it, so you can enjoy it together as a family — not to mention the more than 30 stories already in the Bible App for Kids!

And more!

In the weeks to come, we hope you’ll invest some of the time you’ll be spending with family to intentionally engage with the Bible together. We’re looking forward to helping you explore new ways that you can seek God’s wisdom and encouragement — together, as a family.

“…I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out — plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. When you come looking for me, you’ll find me. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.”
Jeremiah 29:11–13, The Message

New Bible App for Kids Story: Jesus Returns to Heaven: “Into the Clouds”

In the latest story from the Bible App for Kids, “Into the Clouds,” Jesus takes his disciples to a mountaintop near Jerusalem, where he tells them all the things he wants them to do after he leaves. Jesus tells his disciples to go home and wait for a little while, and God’s Holy Spirit will come to them. “Then,” he says, “after that happens, go tell everyone about me.” When you tell other people what Jesus means to you, that helps them learn how they can love him, too!

Jesus promises his disciples, “I will always be with you.” Then he rises up into the sky and disappears into a cloud. And his disciples see the whole thing happen! They are still standing there on the mountain, thinking about everything Jesus just said, when two angels come. The angels tell them that Jesus has gone to Heaven, and that one day, he’ll come back the same way. Jesus’ disciples are excited and happy, and they leave to start doing all the things Jesus told them.

Jesus Sets a Man Free in a New Bible App for Kids Story, “Demons Destroyed”

“Demons Destroyed” is the newest story in the Bible App for Kids. Your kids will thrill at seeing Jesus set a man free from evil spirits that had been tormenting him for years. Based on Mark 5:1–20, as Jesus and his disciples are walking by a cemetery near the Sea of Galilee, they meet a very troubled man. When evil spirits that live inside the man beg Jesus to leave them alone, the man tells Jesus that he has “lots” of mean spirits inside him. Jesus tells the bad spirits they have to leave, making them go into a herd of pigs nearby. All the pigs run into a lake together and drown.

When the pig herders go tell the people in town what happened, everyone comes out to see for themselves. But when they see how different the man is, it makes them afraid, so they ask Jesus to leave. When the grateful man wants to go with Jesus, Jesus tells him he should stay and tell people his happy story instead — that when Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee, he cast out “Lots” and set him free. And that’s just what the man did!

If you already have the Bible App for Kids, all you need to do to get “Demons Destroyed” is open the Bible App for Kids and tap the new story icon. But even if you don’t have the app yet, getting it is easy — and it’s free! Just click one of the buttons below.

Why YouVersion is Bringing the Bible App to Apple Watch

preview with avatar

The power of God’s Word, close at hand.

At YouVersion, we believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, the primary way that He communicates with us. And we believe that the Bible has the power to absolutely transform lives. We’ve seen it happen — again and again and again.

That’s why we keep our mission simple: to help you engage with the Bible. Because we’re convinced that when you spend time with the Bible, either reading or listening, and then carefully reflect on what it’s saying to you, God’s Spirit will do something inside of you. His words will change you, make you into a new person. Ultimately, His words will draw you closer to Him.

That’s what drives every release of the Bible App, every new feature. We research which behaviors seem most likely to help you daily engage with the Bible. We select the ones we believe will be the most effective for the most people, and then we carefully craft features around those.

That’s why we’re bringing the Bible App to Apple Watch.

We’ll be there on launch day, just like we were among the first 200 free apps in Apple’s App Store on the day it launched in 2008. That first version of the Bible App let people have the Bible with them, constantly available everywhere they went. And we never stop evaluating new opportunities that might help you keep God’s Word in front of you.

We realized that certain aspects of this unique platform could deepen the presence of the Bible verses that mean the most to you — those that you tagged specifically with Verse Images, Bookmarks, or Highlights. We even tried to think through how your Apple Watch could help you stay closely connected to your community of Bible App Friends.

After hours of discussing, debating, prototyping, experimenting, tweaking, discarding — then repeating the process — we landed on the features that we think will help you get the most from the Bible App on your Apple Watch. Now we’re looking forward to the new ways we believe God will speak to you through his Word when you’re able to give it this kind of constant, natural presence in your daily life.

Verse of the Day

“Commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine.
Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.”
Deuteronomy 11:18

Every day, the Bible App presents you with the “Verse of the Day,” keystone Bible verses meaningful to believers the world over. With Apple Watch, you can revisit the Verse of the Day anytime you want, with just a glance and a tap.

Biblical Community:
Friend Notifications

“Every time I think of you,
I give thanks to my God.”
Philippians 1:3

Taptic notifications are a brand new feature unique to Apple Watch. If you turn on your Bible App notifications, you’ll feel a tiny vibration each time one of your Bible App Friends likes or comments on your Bible activity. Without even looking, you’ll know that in that very moment, one of your trusted friends is thinking of you, encouraged or inspired by the time you’ve recently spent in God’s Word.

Trending Verses

Trust in the LORD with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5–6

Which Scriptures are other believers engaging with right now? With a tap and a scroll, a quick glance at which Bible verses are trending will give you a sense of what’s happening across the worldwide YouVersion community. Available exclusively on Apple Watch.

Your Verse Images, Bookmarks, and Highlights

“…set your hearts on things above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Colossians 3:1–2

Bible App on Apple Watch will let you scroll through and view your own Verse Images, Bookmarks, and Highlights. It’s a simple, practical way that you can find inspiration, encouragement, or even just a reminder of the things you value most.

All over the world, people just like you are connecting with each other through the global YouVersion community, centered around God’s Word. And very soon, the Bible App for Apple Watch will place the power of that community literally at your fingertips. Make the Bible App one of the first apps you connect to your Apple Watch. As long as your iPhone is up-to-date and Apple Watch-compatible, then the day that your Apple Watch arrives, the Bible App will be there.
