Matthew presents Jesus as the God of Israel who comes to be with his people. He is a new Moses who brings God’s kingdom and a new Torah to Israel.

Matthew 14-28

Matthew shows how Jesus’ announcement of God’s kingdom generates hostility from Israel’s leaders. It all leads to his sacrificial death and resurrection in Jerusalem, and the story ends with the risen Jesus as the new king of the world.

Mark’s story emphasizes the scandalous claim that Jesus is Israel’s messianic king who established his kingdom through his suffering, death, and resurrection.

John presents Jesus as the incarnation of the creator God of Israel, who has come as the fulfillment of Israel’s entire story. In Jesus, God’s love and the gift of eternal life are offered to the world.

John presents Jesus’ final words to his disciples before his death and resurrection. His departure will allow the Spirit to come and empower his followers to carry on his mission in the world.
